Muslim immigrants can be provided with an easier path
to citizenship that can lead them to attaining the right
to vote and sway local government decision.
The inability for Muslim immigrants to have a say in local elections has lead to direct road blocks regarding mosque establishment. As local governments lose interest in this population because they're incapable of voting or executing power, the local governments lose interest in providing them their right to worship.
The only way that immigrants can be granted the right to vote is through citizenship. If Spain were to design an easier path to citizenship, laws regarding voting would not have to be re -drafted and immigrants could become registered voters faster. This would allow them to hold political power and sway the decisions made by local governments in regards to their right to worship. Local governments would then have to pay attention to Muslims because of their capabilities to change who is in power and who will lead them to mosque establishment in their communities.
The Popular (Vox) Party
When the immigrant population gains voting rights through eased citizenship restrictions, the Popular Party will fail to win major elections in local governments. The minority voting group will be able to sway election wins in favor of the other candidates who do not use Islamophobia as a tactic to gain local support. The fall of this political party would result in major change in small - town Catalonia as the local government would have more support for these immigrant groups looking to construct their own religious sites.
Additionally, the Popular Party could stop the use of Islamophobic slurs in campaigning to reach a wider audience of voters and reduce the high amounts of Islamophobia that immigrants face on the local level by demonstrating that this behavior is harmful and wrong. This alone would result in more peacefully coexisting communities in Catalonia.
