Locals Must No Longer Be Neglected

Updated: Mar 15, 2020

Local governments can begin to pay more attention to the locals living in city centers in order to combat their feeling of neglect and the prioritization of immigrants.

Currently, locals of small - town Catalonia feel that they are being neglected by their local governments because there have been little changes made to their communities up until the arrival of Muslim immigrants. They feel that the government has only paid attention to their parts of town since the crisis of mosque establishment began. This reasoning is the main force driving neighborhood associations to draft community manifestos begging the government to not permit zoning and property rights for mosque construction.

To alleviate the tension between these two groups, the government must begin to recognize the needs of locals before they can satisfy the needs of Muslim immigrants. If the locals are given all that they want in city centers, such as community centers, hospitals, and libraries that they beg for in community statements, then they will have no true claim as to why mosque establishment is a dis-service to them. With the locals satisfied and no real backlash by community organizations, the government can then issue the appropriate measures required for mosque construction.

This proposal will take a longer time to accomplish, but will not result in the need for changing the current laws of Spain. Locals will finally feel that they are of top priority to local governments and Muslim communities will be granted their right to worship without the frustration and Islamophobia currently demonstrated by locals.
